Why would you need to rent Sound equipment?

If you’re organising a large event or presentation, part of any good function is the sound. Whether it be through a wireless microphone or in surround sound, making sure that guests in the event can hear you is of vital importance. A good sound system will make sure that your voice, or the sound you need heard, comes through clearly and audibly to everyone, with excellent clarity.

When looking to buy your own audio equipment it can be very expensive for the infrequent amount of times you’ll need access to a large sound & audio system, which is why we offer our sound equipment rental services. Here at IT rentals we have top of the range sound equipment for whatever your needs are, and with our expert team regularly maintaining and checking them, you can rest assured you’ll only be getting the best quality products.

Sound equipment is great for all sorts of events and business, from charity fundraising nights and galas, to multimedia business presentations. We’ve worked with many businesses and companies of all sizes to provide them with the very best equipment possible to make their events pitch perfect. Here, we’ll talk you through what equipment you may need and what we offer.

What sort of equipment do I need?

How much equipment you’ll need and what size will all depend on the event you’re planning on producing. If it’s a small event then a simple two speaker PA system may be suitable, or for larger occasions then more speakers with a high wattage may be necessary. Knowing what makes up a sound system will give you a better idea of what you’ll need to rent.

PA Systems

This is the name given to the overall sound system. When looking to put together a system to spread sound, this is the basic set up to ensure you hit the right notes. Its full name is Public Address system and is generally comprised of three components:

  • Microphone
  • Mixing Desk/ Amplifier
  • Speakers

Each of these parts of the PA system are important for taking your voice or sound input and distributing it clearly to the potential listeners. Public Address systems can come in any manner of size, as it not just refers to private single events but whole systems in airports and supermarkets. All of these will use some collection of these elements for their system.

We have a variety of options for renting a PA system. These are a great choice for those who want the whole package for rental without having to worry about separate components. Ranging from at the lowest a small two speaker system, which is perfect for smaller events to a 4 speaker pro PA system with 4 microphones and a multi channel mixing desk. Or, we can provide something larger should your event require a high wattage PA system, please speak to our expert staff who can build the bespoke PA package for you.

If you’re running a larger conference, then a PA system can be a great starting point to build upon, or you may want to pick and choose to give yourself the best equipment for the job. When looking at PA systems it’s important to know why each separate piece is so important.

Microphone

Whilst it may seem obvious, a microphone receives the noise created around it, and this input is what is sent to a mixing channel. However, what sort of microphone you choose can really help make a presentation dynamic or an event run smoothly.

The standard microphone is handheld and wired, this will give you a simple and effective way to be heard and move around with it in hand. This is also available with wireless to give you an even greater level of mobility and not having to worry about wires getting tangled. Wireless microphones send the audio input through a radio frequency into a receiving box which is then connected to a mixing desk.

Some people complain that with wireless microphones there can be a delay between the microphone and the speaker, but this simply is no longer true. With the latest technology in wireless there is no noticeable delay, allowing you the great mobility with none of the drawbacks.

Also available in wireless options are headset microphones and lapel attached microphones. These are a superb way to free up your hands so that, especially when addressing a large number of people, the only thing you need to focus on is your presentation.

If you’re planning on staying in one place, perhaps a lectern microphone would be a good choice, these simply attach to a stand with all your presentation notes on. Or, if you wish to cut out the use of a mixing desk (or for home recording) you can use a USB microphone that easily connects to your PC.

There are multiple options to consider with microphones and ultimately you want the one you’re most comfortable with, and that is most appropriate for your event. A headset microphone may not be such a great choice when presenting to a room of 30, but is a brilliant choice for conference speakers.

Mixing Desk and Amplifiers

When speaking into the microphone, what dictates the volume and mix of sound that goes out to the speakers is the mixing desk. This has a series of channels which you can connect microphones into as input and then sends the audio as output to the speaker systems connected.

If you’ve only got one speaker or one microphone then a smaller system will be fine, but if you’ve got a whole band on you’ll want something a bit bigger.

Mixing desks don’t just make the input louder or quieter, they’re also used to effect what comes through clearly in the sound. By choosing the right levels of bass, treble and mid sections you can ensure that your voice will come through the speakers clearly. Without a mixing desk often microphones can sound muffled, which when speaking becomes a disaster.

We have a wide range of mixing desks, from 4 channels all the way up to 24, and a grand 32 channel digital desk should you be putting on quite the stage production. Each of our desks are regularly checked and upgraded to the most recent model, so you can rest assured you’re renting the best equipment on the market.

If you’re organising a much larger event, you may also want to consider amplification systems. The amp is what feeds power through to the speakers, and depending on the size of speakers you’ll need more power. Most mixing desks come with some form of amplification installed into them, however, if you’re amplifying a number of speakers then you’ll need more power than just the desk.

Speakers

Finally, we have speakers. This is where all the input to the mixing desk is sent through. Choosing speakers can seem quite straight forward but there are a few things to bear in mind when looking. Looking at the size of your event, you want to make sure you have enough speakers to distribute the sound to everywhere you want it. Placing speaker’s throughout the venue can achieve this.

Also with speakers you will want to consider the power of each output device. If you want the speakers to be very loud then you’ll want a higher wattage, as this means more power is available for amplification. The speakers we offer come in 120 - 480 watts, 150 - 800 w and 300 - 1600 w. Whilst for most events the lowest wattage will do, if you’re planning on having a band on stage or a DJ then in order to make sure they’re heard you may want a higher wattage of speaker.
