So this week we received the exciting news from CERN that they had found something along the lines of the elusive so-called ’God Particle’. They’d been running experiments at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) for decades, looking for the particle named after Professor Higgs- the Higgs Boson, and finally they have found something that looks, sounds and feels just like the Higgs. Not only that but they’ve found it in two seperate places, at both the ATLAS detector and at CMS which strenghens the results tremendously. Discovering this particle is MASSIVE news (no pun intended) and is imperative to The Standard Model.
Why am I, an IT Rentals Account Manager so interested in Physics and things that you can’t even see? Well, I actually went on a short trip to the Large Hadron Collider a couple of years back and found it fascinating, but not only that, it was very interesting to see of the computers, monitors and 3D graphics that they had in the control room of the ATLAS detector. Was was even more interesting is that the graphics I could see were powered by NVIDIA graphics cards! Graphics cards that we too use in our own PCs and laptops, for example our HP Pavillion DV8. I don’t know about you but I think that’s uber cool.
AND…. CERN are the guys that created the World Wide Web AND contributed vastly to the development of Positron Emission Tomography (or PET Scan) that we see in our hospitals today.
So these guys are pretty cool, and their PCs have pretty cool graphics. The same as ITR!
