The fragrance of an unopened MacBook has been recreated by a perfume house as part of an art project.
Three Australian artists, Gavin Bell, Jarrah de Kuijer and Simon McGlinn, contacted Air Aroma to create a scent that smells just like a fresh Apple gadget. Known collaboratively as ‘Greatest Hits’, this trio of artists came up with the idea just in time for their new exhibition.
In order to replicate the smell, the perfumers sidelined traditional ingredients like jasmine and vanilla in favour of the “aroma of glue, plastic, rubber and paper”, according to their website.
They were also sent a selection of boxed Macbook Pro laptops to use as inspiration for their quirky assignment.
The Air Aroma blog says: “A distinctive scent can be observed when unwrapping a newly purchased Apple product from its packaging. Apple fans will certainly recognize this smell. The scent created for Greatest Hits encompasses the smell of the plastic wrap covering the box, printed ink on the cardboard, the smell of paper and plastic components within the box and of course the aluminum laptop.”
The unusual perfume will not be available for sale. However, it will be displayed at an exhibition in Melbourne from tomorrow – the scent will be diffused through the air during the event for those visitors who want to treat their olfactory to the smell of a brand new Apple device.
