Traditional children’s stories and characters have been revamped in a series of apps specifically designed for the younger generation. Tales such as Hickory Dickory Dock and Jack and The Beanstalk have received a makeover from UK based technology specialists Mindshapes. Currently both of the stories mentioned above are available for Apple’s iOS and can be purchased on the app store for iPad or iPhone.
The new apps are meeting rising demand for applications that encourage consumer’s children to get more involved with mobile technology. The main focus of the apps is offering something valuable to the users. For example, Minshapes’ Hickory Dickory Dock teaches children the principles of time through both animation, songs and interactive games.
“The whole idea behind Mindshapes is to take educational principles and mix them with creative passion. It’s the marriage of both. We’ll choose an age group and subject, think about the educational principles and how they fit into the school curriculum, and then layer creative talent – game designers, artists and creatives – so we don’t just end up with a flash-card app,” commented Minshapes’ director of mobile product development Jinhee Ahn Kim.
Ms Ahn Kim also went on to say that one of the main focus points when creating the apps was developing games in which children don’t necessarily realise they are learning. This meant that Minshapes had to ensure that the apps were both engaging and visually interesting thereby removing the direct focus from the educational facts.
