Amazon Windowshop app for iPad launched

A new iPad application designed to work specifically with touch screen tablets has been launched by online book seller Amazon.

The Amazon Windowshop app will allow users to scroll through 40 different categories across the site, tap the screen to zoom in on products and browse through audio and visual previews using a multi-touch interface.

Amazon.com founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos said: “Amazon Windowshop is a top-to-bottom rewrite of Amazon.com – designed and built without compromise just for iPad. Same selection, same low prices, same fast delivery, same benefits of your Amazon Prime membership – just a completely new, fluid interface designed specifically for lean-back, touch screen tablets”.

Products available on the site are listed vertically and items can be added to shopping carts with a tap and slide of the finger, leading experts to describe the new app as user-friendly.

The features are extremely similar to the ones found on the Amazon website meaning that users can still browse by category, view bestseller lists and search by keyword. In fact the online giant said “many Amazon customers may prefer Amazon Windowshop even when a large-screen web interface is readily available”.

The app is currently available for free on the App store in America and will shortly be launched in the UK.
